6Josh Chapnick was only 28 years old in 2008 when he passed away as a result of a seizure. Bruce, Sandi, and Nicole Chapnick, Josh’s parents and sister, knew immediately that they wanted to create a resource for others with epilepsy to honor the memory of Josh. The Chapnick family established the Joshua David Chapnick Memorial Fund with the Community Foundation of Sarasota County. The fund originally assisted people with all or a portion of their transportation expenses and prescription medications.

In July, 2010, the fund was moved to Mission Healthcare and the name was changed to the Joshua David Chapnick Epilepsy & Seizure Disorder Fund. The fund thrived and helped many people. As a result of this growth and after numerous discussions between the Chapnick family and the executives at Mission, the decision was made for the fund to become its own nonprofit organization to pursue the goals of the Chapnick family.

On March 22, 2013, the JoshProvides Epilepsy Foundation was organized as a Florida nonprofit corporation. The Foundation had thirteen original members on its Board of Directors to complete an effective succession plan for the Chapnick family and ensure the perpetuation of the foundation.

By July, 2013, the Foundation had registered under the Florida Solicitation Contributions Act and received Registration Number CH39093. Following a review of the Foundation’s application, on September 24, 2013 (effective March 22, 2013), the Internal Revenue Service determined the Foundation is a public charity under IRC Section 170(b)(1)(A)(vi) and is exempt from federal income tax under IRC Section 501(c)(3). Contributions to the Foundation are deductible under IRC Section 170. JoshProvides is also qualified to receive tax-deductible bequests, devises, transfers, and gifts under IRC Sections 2055, 2106, or 2522. The Foundation’s endowed and non-endowed investment accounts are handled by the Community Foundation of Sarasota County.

Today, JoshProvides is helping people in its local Sarasota and Manatee Counties, throughout Florida, and across the United States. One family at a time, JoshProvides is helping win the battle against epilepsy.
